wabi sabi: open plan living

B R I E F: Translate the Wabi Sabi concept to a residential project that highlights the values of the concept and experiments with open living spaces.

C O N C E P T: Wabi Sabi - an unspoken intrinsic concept in Japanese culture that values imperfections and craftsmanship, and celebrates change over time. The wabi sabi concept has strong roots in the Japanese tea ceremony and so I took inspiration from tea houses and tea gardens - a lot of the design takes inspiration from shoji screens and the flexibility that they bring to Japanese design and architecture. The design took inspiration from traditional Japanese craft techniques such as shoji screens, shou sugi ban and kintsugi.
